Introduction
Channel 5 News is a 24-hour television news channel serving the Greater Los Angeles area. The station is owned by the E. W. Scripps Company and is a sister station to KTLA (channel 5).
Channel 5 News has been on the air since 1948 and was one of the first 24-hour news channels in the country. The station has won numerous awards, including five Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award.
In recent years, however, Channel 5 News has been losing viewers. In 2019, the station ranked fifth in viewership among all Los Angeles news stations. That same year, Channel 5 News saw its worst ratings ever for a May sweeps period.
Part of the reason for the decline in viewership may be due to changes in the news industry. More and more people are getting their news from online sources instead of watching television. However, Channel 5 News has also been embroiled in several controversies in recent years that may have turned some viewers away from the station.
In 2016, for example, then-anchor Chris Burrous was fired after he was arrested for soliciting sex from an undercover police officer. Burrous had been with Channel 5 News for more than 15 years and was one of the station’s most popular anchors. His firing sent shockwaves through the Los Angeles media community and likely turned some viewers away from Channel 5 News.
In 2019, another controversy rocked Channel 5 News when it was revealed that then-chief Meteorologist Henry DiCarlo had posted racist comments on social media. DiCarlo quickly deleted his social media accounts and issued an apology, but the damage had been done. He was ultimately fired from Channel 5 News later that year.
The departures of Burrous and DiCarlo – two of the most popular personalities on Channel 5 News – likely contributed to the decline in viewership that the station has seen in recent years.
